ActiveSync Toggle / Support

ActiveSync seems to enable itself even though I have used ActiveSync Toggle to disable it
This is a direct result of the new Sync feature that Microsoft has added to Windows Media Player 10. It occurs when opening Windows Media Player 10 (with hotfix KB894476 installed) whilst ActiveSync 4 (or later) is also installed. Apart from switching to ActiveSync 3 or uninstalling hotfix KB894476, there is currently no known workaround. Further details can be found here.
We would like to thank David Falconi from Canada for his help in finding the source of this problem.

ActiveSync Toggle says "ActiveSync does not appear to be installed" even though it is.
This is a bug in ActiveSync Toggle (V1.0.1.0 and earlier) that will only appear on machines where the registry has certain security polices applied (mainly office PC's).
This problem will be fixed in the next version of ActiveSync Toggle (V1.0.2.0) due to be released in December 2003.
To work around this problem (until the new version is released) you will need read & write access to the following registry key :-
  HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\App Paths\WCESCOMM.EXE

ActiveSync Toggle says that ActiveSync is loaded, yet there is no ActiveSync System Tray Icon.
Unfortunately ActiveSync can be a temperamental program. If you try to disable it whilst your PDA is connected, ActiveSync tends to get itself confused and hangs (although the System Tray Icon disappears). From then on ActiveSync Toggle will not be able to close it and the only way around this is to reboot or kill it in the Task Manager. The cure is to remove your PDA before you close ActiveSync.
Update: Version 3.5 (Build 12007) and upwards does not appear to display this behaviour. ActiveSync still doesn't close, unless the PDA is disconnected, but at-least it doesn't hang and leave itself in an unstable state.
